It has long been speculated that Gates was buried on a large casket in the grounds of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, a location where his body is now being interred.
However, it is not known if the body is still in the Smithsonian, as Gates is believed to have died in New York City.
According to a New York Times article from February, Gates’ body has been located in a secret crypt at the Smithsonian and is believed by some to be buried at a different location.
Gates’ family has previously claimed he was buried in Washington D.C. and in a casket at the University of Pennsylvania.
Gates has been an avid outdoorsman, and he reportedly once walked across the Pennsylvania-Ohio border and into Canada on a canoe with a group of friends.
In 2015, Gates was photographed walking down the Ohio River, wearing a hat, a pair of hiking boots and gloves.
The article reported Gates was walking on a stretch of land that was not known to be Gates’ actual grave site.
However on the same day that the article was published, the Smithsonian released a statement claiming Gates was not buried there and was actually found in a nearby cemetery.
The Smithsonian did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
